If you want to be a teacher and you have already graduated from college, you will need to get your teacher certification.

There are a few different ways to do that, and thankfully there are two highly effective programs right here in our community.

UTEP’s Miner Teacher  Residency Alternative Certification Program combines research-based approaches to curriculum planning, classroom management, and effective instruction with intensive coaching and hands-on practice in classrooms – all with the goal of preparing the highest-quality teachers to serve all students.

Miner Teacher Residents pursuing alternative certification can select two pathways: stand-alone certification or certification as part of an
accelerated masters degree in education.

The Miner Teacher Residency Alternative Certification Program is based on a cohort model. Residents participate in an intensive summer preparation program comprised of three graduate-level courses, followed by a classroom placement that includes tailored coaching and mentorship by a UTEP Site Coordinator
who works closely with school administration.

Region 19’s Alternative Certification program is a field-based training model in which competencies are learned from a variety of specialists. Upon successful completion of all program requirements, internship, program recommendations and a passing score on all necessary TExES exams, participants will earn a Texas teaching certificate specific to their study area.

There are also online alternative certification programs available.

However – a word of caution – not all Alternative Certification Programs are made equal. Most online Alternative Certification Programs do not offer any individualized coaching or hands-on practice in a real classroom learning alongside current teachers. Many of these “fast track” online alternative programs may offer online support, but most people really benefit from in-person training and mentoring. Without it, new teachers can feel overwhelmed or not be as effective with their students. Although completing your teaching certification online may seem like a great option, you may want to consider a program that will better prepare you.
